Make a fire escape plan with your parents.
Try to find at least two ways out of every room.
Always stay low. That is where the clean air is.
Be sure to check any doors before opening them to see if they are hot.
If the door is hot, DON'T open it. Use your second way out - Maybe a window.
Pick a safe place outside to meet your family after you get out.
After you are out, STAY OUT! Never go back inside to get anything.
Be sure to call 911 or the fire department from a neighbors phone after you get out.
After you make your escape plan, practice it with your family. Make sure you know two ways out, how to stay low, how to check doors for heat, and where your meeting place is.
If you live in an apartment building the best thing may be to stay in your apartment until the fire department arrives to get you.
If you stay in your apartment call 911 or the fire department to let them know where you are.
Place towels or clothes around the base of the door to keep smoke out.
Open the window a few inches from the top & a few inches from the bottom to let smoke out & fresh air in.
If the window draws in smoke, CLOSE it right away.
Hang a bright cloth out of the window to attract attention. Be patient, it may be a while before the fire department can get you.
If you leave your apartment be sure to use the stairs. NEVER use elevators they can stop on floors where the fire is or they can stop and trap you.
Be sure to take the key to your apartment with you in case you are forced back because of the fire.
